W4G/NG-024 Rock Mountain

2 mile hike with 810' EG. The hike starts along the Bartram Trail and the last 0.3 miles is off-trail through open forest along the northeast ridgeline of the summit. The summit is fairly broad, flat and typical southern hardwood forest - plenty of options for setting up. On the NW side of the summit is a nice rock outcrop with outstanding views, plus plenty of space for setting up. I scouted the northwest ridgeline before heading out and it looked like a Rhododendron snarl. I do not recommend that route from the Bartram Trail.

The trailhead (34.938, -83.335) is located in Wilson Gap along seasonal FS Road 155F (3/15-1/02). High-clearance 4WD is highly recommended for the last 1/2 mile before the trailhead. If in doubt, you can park anywhere after 34.939, -83.329. The Bartram Trail follows the roadbed at this point and is just around the corner from the real trailhead. I have never driven past the trailhead, but 155F does continue on and ends 120 vertical feet below Windy Gap. This would cut off well over a mile of hiking if you are able to drive to this point.
